IELTS Writing Task 2 Model Answer
Societies worldwide are being absorbed into mainstream culture. One consequence has been the loss of many traditional costumes and the increasing dominance of a Western dress code. In this essay, I will explore the potential benefits of global fashion trends, such as fostering unity and economic growth, as well as the drawbacks, including the loss of cultural identity and traditional crafts.
The globalisation of fashion has led to people across the globe donning similar styles and trends. This trend promotes global unity and understanding. When people wear similar styles, it helps to break down cultural barriers and fosters a sense of belonging to a global community. This can be particularly beneficial in multicultural societies where diverse populations coexist. Moreover, the global fashion industry creates significant economic opportunities. Designers and brands can access larger markets, leading to increased sales and job creation. The proliferation of online shopping has also made it easier for consumers to access global fashion trends, contributing to economic growth.
However, the homogenisation of fashion can lead to the erosion of cultural identity. Traditional clothing often holds significant cultural and historical value, and its loss can diminish the richness of a community’s heritage. For instance, the traditional dress of indigenous peoples or specific ethnic groups is not just about aesthetics but also represents their unique cultural narratives and practices. Moreover, the dominance of global fashion brands can overshadow local artisans and designers who struggle to compete with large corporations. This can lead to a decline in traditional crafts and techniques, further endangering cultural heritage.
In conclusion, while the increasing similarity of fashion around the world fosters global unity and economic opportunities, it also threatens the loss of traditional clothing and cultural identity. Therefore, it is essential to find a balance that allows for the coexistence of global fashion trends and the preservation of cultural heritage. By doing so, we can ensure that the rich tapestry of our world’s cultures continues to thrive alongside modern fashion.
